Berlin Zoo - Birdhouse

Aviary with treetop path and free flight halls

The birdhouse of Privy Councillor Heck, which dates back to the 19th century, fell victim to destruction in the Second World War. In 1962, under the direction of Prof. Klös, the new aviary was built, which for the first time contained a free-flight hall for Berlin. After several conversions and renovations, the building, which had been damaged by the building fabric in the meantime - after all, it had been in service for almost 50 years - was replaced by another new building. Three large free flight rooms (Africa, Australia and South Asia) are supplemented by 100 aviaries, also dedicated to the three continents, as well as a small selection of American birds and a systematic section for parrots.
